£650.00
A 19th century tapestry cartoon depicting the famous fable 'Le Loup et l'Agneau' ('The Wolf and The Lamb') by fabulist Jean de la Fontaine (1621-1695). Contemporary literature inspired many tapestry designs of the period, and this is a beautiful example. The final tapestry was used on the seat of an armchair, as annotated in the top right-hand corner with the words 'siege de fauteuil' ('armchair seat').
Gouache on thick paper. From Aubusson, Central France.
Visible signs of wear commensurate with use and age. Sold as seen, unframed.
(W78cm x H73cm)
