– SoldA beautifully crafted reverse painting of birds on glass, with an ornate golden trim, and set in a slightly worn gilded frame.
At the base of the painting is the maker's signature: Églomisé par Hoethe Fils à Lyon, Octobre 1840 (= "Églomisé by Hoethe Son in Lyon, October 1840"). The maker's label is also on the back of the frame.
The technique of 'verre églomisé' consists in reverse gilding / painting glass and is believed to pre-date the Romans. It was re-introduced by French collector Jean Baptiste Glomy (1711-1786), who inspired its name.
