Large and beautifully painted in green and red shades, is this marriage chest from the Alps region in south-eastern France. The trunk is dated 1817 on the bottom of the front.
Traditionally gifted to brides to store personal linens and garments. Such chests also symbolise prosperity in new households.
With a lid that opens to reveal a substantial storage space, the lock is a work of art in itself (see photos!).
There is also a working key and the trunk sits on bracket feet.
