18th century marriage chest

£2,250.00

Large and beautifully painted in green and red shades, is this marriage chest from the Alps region in south-eastern France.

Traditionally gifted to brides to store personal linens and garments. Such chests also symbolise prosperity in new households.

With a lid that opens to reveal a substantial storage space, the lock is a work of art in itself (see photos!).

There is also a working key and the trunk sits on bracket feet.

Please refer to the last photo for an idea of the scale of this large chest.
