18th century oak salt chair. Salt, being an expensive commodity during this period, would be stored inside accessed via the hinged seat. The salt was then guarded by the person sitting on the chair.

In mainly original condition; the lower panels at the sides and the base have been replaced at some point. 

Wear commensurate with age and use. From a town called Bourges, France.
